At our club meeting on Tuesday, Kevin Greenwood gave a fine explanation of what is involved with putting together the weekly program. Together Mike Houston and Kevin Greenwood pull together all the person’s responsible for: the singing of “Oh Canada, Rick Potter’s list of persons’ on Invocation, Dennis Campbell’s member care, Lenetta Parry’s sheriff list, and together they make sure the short program and feature presenter are all lined up. Having done all that, they hope like hell the MC’s don’t screw it up and the meeting will end on time. A big shout out to all involved.
Kevin Greenwood also spoke to how in Rotary partisanship can be set aside. Whether politics or Rotary, partisanship can replace everything else, it can blind us to morality and to the truth. Within our political culture partisanship has become the idol of our time. Within Rotary it restricts our membership and tarnishes our public image. When I travel to various Rotary functions it is not depressing to be a Rotarian. At PETs for example, I met people starting amazing projects, or starting amazing non-profit organizations. These are phenomenal people doing remarkable things they are committed to, healing communities one way or another. No question, going to these functions lifts you up.
To that point, our Rotary after 5 function is this Thursday March 7th at the Gasthaus in Peachland. The amazing and phenomenal Dave Cullen is hosting.
Dr. Allen Jones was our feature presenter on Tuesday. He has, in just a few short years put the Kelowna teaching hospital at the top of medical school’s nation wide. It was -8 and felt like -20 that day. I’m not a global warming believer. I’m not a global warming denier. But, thirty years ago, the scientific consensus was that we were headed for global cooling. Around this time, in 1992 the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that actually measured the mean body temperature at 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit and not 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit as recorded in 1868 by Carl Wunderlich. We lost 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit. My whole university education a myth. I put it down to global cooling. So much nonsense. So much damage. Medicine has a hard time with humility, so says, Dr. Jones, contrary to the facts and the evidence, global warming and 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit exist. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed Dr. Jones’ presentation and our time at the head table.
Dale Briggs seemed to be in FINE form this week, raising a little money while keeping us entertained. Good job!
Next week our feature presenter will be Keneisha Charles: Interact Club at Rutland Senior Secondary
