Awesomeness is the new word in District 5060’s lexicon. The District Conference held in Kamloops this weekend used Awesomeness to describe the energy and engagement that was awash this year under District Governor Sherry Chamberlain’s vision. Fifty of us from Kelowna took part in what was arguably the best District Conference in recent memory. Great speakers with themes on change and youth engagement created an environment of imagination and vision, of what Rotary must be for the future.
Rotary International, District Clubs and Individuals have been asking for years, how can we make Rotary be relevant today. 1.2 million people belong to Rotary world wide and that number has not changed in 10 years. So, this begs the questions on whether we are at a pivotal moment this year and can we change?
Last week we had a very informative speaker who laid out the risks of obesity and inactivity. In her presentation she identified two changes we could make to increase our health and longevity. Diet and exercise, sound familiar. For many of us in the room our life style has not changed much in ten years to compensate for the natural aging process. Convinced that I am at least pre-diabetic I opened my fridge to see what changes I could make. The first thing that stood out was the cheese cake! Adding to my dilemma were the cheeses, processed meats, olives and grapes that go naturally with the wine. Adding to my anxiety was the thought of my bike which I have not seen in years. The answer is clear, I need to change, or diabetes and congestive heart failure are imminent! Am I at a pivotal moment in my life? Is Rotary at a pivotal moment in its life? Will we change?
At the District Conference golf, wine tasting, and activities abound. But Rotary is about the individual and their story. So, I look forward to hearing those awesomeness stories at Rotary tomorrow. We also have 4 new inductees.
The place to be in Kelowna at noon.
