We are all looking forward to Dennis Campbells recovery from hip surgery and hope to see him at Rotary next week.

Tuesday’s Rotary meeting went by very quickly thanks in part to an excellent presentation by Kevin Karrdal. Kevin is the Superintendent of Schools for District 23 and I had the pleasure of meeting with him in late January of this year. Kevin is an engaging and thoughtful individual and I was pleased that Murli Pendharkar was able to make this meeting for us happen. Our meeting in late January echoed the same sentiments that Kevin brought to our club on Tuesday. The tone and tenure in both meetings focused on social competencies in kindness compassion and thoughtful communication. In a world of quick texts and twitter he sees the need to think deeply, be curious, and innovative. He is asking his students to look for their passion and use their imagination. Kevin spoke to a practical partnership with Rotary in several ways; currently through a program called “Food for Thought” identifying the need to feed students less fortunate, and the need for a “technology hub”. Chris Patton did a great job of introducing and thanking Kevin.

This Tuesday’s speaker is Karoline Radic a Source Control Technician from the City of Kelowna.

The following Tuesday, April 2nd, will be a Member Assembly Meeting.  Kathy Butler, Peter Schultz, Tony French, and I would like to have a club review. The review will be the foundation for any action items that come to light. Based on a round table format we hope that key themes emerge from these group discussions. These themes and points of interest will be addressed at a club meeting scheduled in the first week of May.

I attended the Rotary Club of Kelowna Foundation meeting on Thursday where I received a $25,000.00 check for Silver Lake Education Society our Major Project this year. Other business related to ‘The Rotary Club” directly, were the disbursement of funds raised by the “Fox Hunt”. The beneficiaries of these proceeds are JoeAnna’s House and Hands in Service. Regarding JoeAnna’s House, the RCoK Foundation is waiting on a District Grant made by JoeAnna’s house to be completed by May, at which time the amount of approx. $3000.00 will be forwarded. There are some house keeping issues that the RCoK Foundation needed before issuing a check for approx. $2000.00 to Hands in Service. These are minor and should be cleaned up by their next meeting and a check will be forth coming to Hands in Service. Thanks again to Sandy Ketler for her efforts around this fundraiser.

Our Board of Directors Meeting also met on Thursday. The BOD made motions on several projects brought forward by the International Committee. First, that the club donate $750.00 to support supplying books for a library being created in La Cuesta, Honduras. Secondly, that the club fund the International Project “HER” in participation with the Kelowna Sunrise Club for $2000.00 USD subject to Global Grant approval. And thirdly, that the Club fund International Project—water sanitation project in Nicaragua in participation with the Salmon Arm Club for $1000.00 USD subject to Global Grant approval.

The BOD is also active in Strategic Planning around the Club Assembly in April, the Major Project process, Club Dues, and lunch expenses. We are also looking at implementing a Criminal Record Check for those working with youth as, “a best practices measure”.

Hope to see you all Tuesday. “The place to be in Kelowna at noon”
